Breast implant revision is an option for women who have had breast implants for ten or more years or for those who are simply dissatisfied with their current implant type, shape or feel. The majority of silicone gel breast implants are designed to last about ten years, after which time patients may choose to replace their old implant with a saline implant or a newer gel product. Like breast augmentation, breast implant revision can increase cup size, create a more proportionate figure and boost self-confidence. While there is currently no scientific proof linking the leakage of silicone implants to health issues, a switch to saline may be a consideration for some women looking for more peace of mind.

The surgical details of breast implant revision are similar to those of breast augmentation. Incisions may be made in the underarm, on the edge of the areola or under the breast, and the implant is then inserted through the incision. Breast implant revision takes one to two hours to complete and is performed on an outpatient basis. Recovery time typically takes two to three weeks for most women, and a bra will need to be work for at least three to four weeks.
