Breast Reconstruction
For women whose breasts differ noticeably in size or shape, breast symmetry surgery, also known as breast reconstruction, is an option. One breast may be larger or smaller than the other for a number of reasons. Once medical problems are ruled out, many women with uneven breasts and women who have undergone mastectomies choose to undergo breast symmetry surgery. In many cases, women undergoing a mastectomy may have the breast symmetry surgery performed at the same time. Breast symmetry surgery can make the breasts appear nearly identical when wearing a bra.
We perform a variety of breast symmetry procedures at our clinic including breast augmentation, lift and reduction. TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Muscle) flap surgery is another option and, though we do not currently perform this procedure at our clinic, we have provided an explanation of this procedure below for the benefit of patient education.
TRAM involves the insertion of saline breast implants after a tissue expander has been used to stretch the skin. The tissue expander functions much like a balloon. It is periodically filled with saline solution during an office visit until the skin has stretched to the appropriate size. Surgical times for TRAM tend to be longer than those for breast augmentation with implants, and patients are required to spend several days in the hospital. During the procedure, a small portion of tissue is removed from another part of the body and used to construct the new breast. Another procedure may be performed to reconstruct the nipple and areola, often with the use of a skin graft several months after the breast symmetry procedure.
