Liposuction, Liposculpture, Lipoplasty, and Lipo

North Carolina LiposuctionLiposuction is the surgical removal of unwanted fat. While the procedure may go by many other names, including liposculpture, lipoplasty, lipo and lipectomy, the basic idea remains the same. An incision is made in the treatment area, a medicated fluid is injected, and fat is loosened and vacuumed out. Problem areas like the abdomen, arms, buttocks, face, hips, knees, neck and thighs are all commonly treated with liposuction. The procedure is particularly helpful in smoothing areas of the body that have proven resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is also used in many other procedures like abdominoplasty, body lifts, and brachioplasty. While the best results tend to be achieved in patients with good skin elasticity, improvement can be achieved with any figure.

Many factors help to determine the surgical time and recovery period, including the amount of fat being removed, the technique used, and the type of anesthesia used. Three of the most common techniques used for liposuction include the tumescent technique, the super-wet technique, and the ultrasound technique. Tumescent liposuction is the most well-known of the techniques and can be performed with local anesthesia. During the procedure the treatment area is injected with a fluid which causes the fatty tissue to become ‘tumesced’ or swollen, making the removal of fat much easier. The super-wet technique is similar to the tumescent technique, though less fluid is injected and either IV sedation or general anesthesia is used. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, or UAL, is a newer technique which uses a probe and sound waves to liquefy the fat prior to removal. UAL uses the same surgical technique as tumescent liposuction but it tends to be more effective on difficult areas like the breast tissue. The correct liposuction technique is determined on an individual basis with the help of your doctor.
