Otoplasty Ear Pinning
Protruding ears can be a significant source of distress, particularly for young children who may be teased by peers. The psychological trauma of these early events can even have an impact through adulthood. Otoplasty is a simple procedure, which can make a dramatic improvement, both emotionally and physically.
Most common ear deformities involve either an ear which is normally shaped but protrudes further from the head than is normal or an ear which is abnormally folded. These deformities can be present on one or both ears.
Otoplasty is usually performed under twilight or general anesthesia in a child, but can be performed under local anesthesia in an adult. The usual recovery is less than one week. However, an elastic compression dressing is worn at night for two to three weeks.
The ideal time to perform this surgery in a child is at approximately age five. This enables the surgery to be performed after the ear is nearly grown but before the child enters school and is vulnerable to peer abuse. Dr. Stein can use our Computer Imaging System to illustrate what types of results you should expect.
