How Long is Recovery from a Facelift?

While there are numerous non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques on the market these days, there’s no comparison to a facelift when it comes to results. Facelifts are and will always remain the gold standard when it comes to age-defying facial rejuvenation. With the latest advancements in surgical techniques, patients are able to achieve dramatic, long-lasting results with minimal downtime.

Dr. Stein is a double board-certified facial surgeon with the skill and expertise needed to optimize the healing process and get you back into your normal routine as quickly as possible. He meticulously works to remove loose or sagging skin, thin bothersome pockets of fat, and tighten underlying muscles. The result is a naturally, more youthful appearance.

The amount of time you’ll need for recovery depends on the skill of your surgeon, the type of facelift, and your body’s natural self-healing process. Closely following your post-surgical recovery plan can also increase your odds of recovering faster.

Immediately following your facelift procedure, you’ll need to head home for some much-needed rest and relaxation. You should have a friend or family member on-hand for at least 24-hours to help with minor tasks. After a day or two, you’ll likely be up and moving around, but it’s essential that you don’t push yourself too hard at this time.

Swelling, bruising, and pain should begin to subside within 3-5 days. At which point, you can begin to incorporate light activities into your schedule. Mineral-based makeup can often be applied around day 10 to mask any post-surgical scarring (consult Dr. Stein beforehand).

The majority of patients return to work 10-14 days post-surgery. However, you may want to take more time off from work just to be on the safe side especially if you have a job that is physically demanding or requires prolonged sun exposure.

If you’d like to look your best for social situations with lots of photo ops, you may want to schedule your facelift at least 4-weeks beforehand. Some residual swelling may still be present but should only be noticeable to you.

Listen to your body as you recover. It will often tell you when enough is enough. Pushing yourself too hard too fast can put you at risk for potential complications and prolong the healing process. It can take upwards of 6-months to settle back into your normal pre-surgery routine.

Prior to your surgery, Dr. Stein will create a custom recovery plan tailored to your individual needs. Afterward, Dr. Stein will be available through every step of your recovery to answer questions and provide guidance as needed. At Stein Plastic Surgery, our goal is to provide exceptional patient-centric care you can feel good about.
