Designed to enhance the appearance of your neck, a neck lift removes excess skin and fat to give you a slimmer profile and a more defined jawline. While a neck lift won’t stop the aging process, results are long-lasting. Recovery time may vary, but most people can return to work within two weeks.

Dr. Adam D. Stein is a double board-certified plastic surgeon dedicated to your well-being and health. He combines skill and 26 years of experience to create natural-looking results you’ll love.

What Should I Expect During My Recovery?

Recovery from a neck lift can take several weeks. Some discomfort during the initial healing phase is normal, but significant pain is unusual. Following Dr. Stein’s post-operative instructions is crucial and will help manage any discomfort.

You can expect a follow-up visit within 5-10 days to remove your sutures. Additional visits will be scheduled as necessary for up to 18 months. Giving yourself time to heal will ensure you get the most benefit from the procedure.

Bruising and Swelling

Bruising may occur immediately following the procedure, or several days later, but will fade in 10-14 days. Swelling may take between 6 and 12 weeks to gradually subside. You may need to wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling.

Pain and Discomfort

Many patients report feelings of pain fading after three or four days, though it can persist for up to one week. For mild discomfort, over-the-counter medication is recommended. If you experience more significant discomfort, Dr. Stein will prescribe pain medication.

Numbness and Itching

You may experience temporary numbness as a result of facial aesthetic surgery. It can take several months for superficial sensory nerves to repair themselves and for a normal feeling to return. Any itching sensations can be addressed with an over-the-counter antihistamine.

Emotional Sensitivity

Some patients experience a general sense of melancholy during the first few weeks as a result of not yet looking or feeling their best. These feelings are normal. As you begin to feel better physically, your emotional state will also improve.

What Should My Activity Level Be?

As a general guideline, you should avoid:

  • Lifting more than 10 pounds for 2 weeks
  • Strenuous activities for 3-4 weeks
  • Sharply turning your head for 6 weeks

Walking is encouraged immediately to reduce the chance of blood clots.

What Are My Post-Operative Instructions?

Dr. Stein will provide you with comprehensive post-operative instructions. Some general recommendations are:

  • Protect your skin from the sun
  • Don’t smoke or drink alcohol for 3 weeks
  • Don’t wear clothing you need to pull over your head

Sleep is important for healing. Keep your head elevated above your heart while sleeping during the first couple of weeks.
