Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery that alters the internal structure of the nose to improve its external appearance or function. One of the most common questions relating to rhinoplasty surgery (most often referred to as a nose job) has to do with the difference between open and closed techniques. Today, we’ll take a look at a few key differences to help determine which procedure might be best for your individual needs and goals.

What are My Options?

Your procedure is as unique as you are, which means your underlying nasal skeleton and your desired changes will determine which technique is used. During your personal consultation, Dr. Stein, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, will help you decide which method will best enhance your natural beauty. Although final results may take up to a year or more to see, when performed by a skilled surgeon, rhinoplasty is considered a lifetime procedure.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty allows for more complete access to the nasal structures to sculpt the nose into the desired shape. A secondary benefit of this method is that the chances of nasal cartilage distortion are greatly reduced. Generally used for more extensive reshaping, patients who want significant changes to the shape, size or position of their nose are ideal candidates for this procedure.

The obvious downside to an open rhinoplasty is that visible scarring is more likely. In most cases, Dr. Stein is able to hide scars in the natural creases or contours of the nose. Downtime following an open rhinoplasty may be as little as 7-10 days before patients are able to return to work. It may take up to two weeks to resume social activities.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty is most commonly used for patients seeking to correct minor concerns who don’t want an extended recovery. This procedure results in very little pain, side effects, and downtime. The greatest benefit of this method is that there is no visible scarring because incisions are made entirely inside the nostril.

The most notable downside to this procedure is that Dr. Stein has limited access to the tip of the structures of the nose. Additional drawbacks to this method are higher chances of nasal cartilage distortion and difficulty repositioning the nasal skin. Closed rhinoplasty requires a greater degree of surgical skill and comprehension of facial anatomy.

How Do I Get Started?

Depending on your nasal anatomy and desired outcome, one rhinoplasty technique may be better suited for you over another. It’s important to consider not only your aesthetic goals but also your lifestyle – how much time you can take off work and whether you have social engagements upcoming.

Dr. Stein has performed thousands of rhinoplasty surgeries over the years. He’s committed to making sure you’re well-informed about your procedure and will answer any questions you may have. Once you’ve decided to move forward, Stein Plastic Surgery will help you customize a surgical and recovery plan that’s right for you.
