What is a Blepharoplasty?

Are droopy or sagging eyelids keeping your eyes from opening completely? Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) may be just what you need to look as young as you feel. As you age, excess fat gathers above and below your eyelids causing sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids, and bags under your eyes. Eyelid surgery has been used by patients for aesthetic as well as medical purposes. Most patients only need one blepharoplasty in a lifetime.

As a double-board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Stein has helped countless men and women improve the appearance, as well as function, of their eyes with minimal visible scarring. You may undergo blepharoplasty at the same time as another procedure, such as a brow lift or facelift. Known for his natural-looking results, Dr. Stein evaluates your facial anatomy and discusses what combination of procedures might be best suited for your needs.

What Kinds of Blepharoplasty Are There?

There are two types of blepharoplasty: upper and lower. They can be done on their own or combined into one procedure. Dr. Stein will discuss your options and determine if you are suited for one or both.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Excess tissue on your upper eyelids can impair your vision. The excess skin is removed through an incision that is hidden in the eyelid crease. This procedure is typically completed in less than one hour and with twilight anesthesia.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is most commonly done solely for cosmetic reasons to address puffiness and “bags” under the eyes. Dr. Stein will make a cut in your eye’s natural crease or inside the lower lid to remove or redistribute excess fat, muscle, and sagging skin before closing the cut. Lower eyelid lifts are typically done under twilight anesthesia in less than an hour.

Combination Procedures

If a combination procedure is recommended, you can expect enhanced anti-aging results and reduce your recovery time by completing both surgeries at the same time. In these situations, Dr. Stein will generally work on your upper lids first before correcting the lower lids.

Which Procedure Is Right For Me?

The best way to determine which procedure, or combination of procedures, is right for you is to schedule a consultation with Stein Plastic Surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Stein will:

  • Assess your concerns.
  • Evaluate your medical condition.
  • Review your surgical options.
  • Discuss the type of anesthesia that will be used.
  • Discuss like outcomes and potential risks.

After taking the time to understand the look you want to achieve, Dr. Stein will provide a custom treatment plan tailored to your specific goals.

I scheduled s consultant with Dr. Stein for lower blepharoplasty. He was very attentive and knowledgeable and answered my questions without making me feel overlooked. The atmosphere in his practice eased me and I cannot say enough wonderful things about his staff, starting from the receptionist to the procedure area. The results exceeded my expectations and I am so happy with my results. I couldn’t think of any other surgeon that I would trust to perform any of his areas of specialty for me. I highly recommend Dr. Stein to anyone who would be looking for natural looking results and the aftercare is a plus. He called me at home later that day to make sure I was doing ok. Hands down Dr. Stein is the BEST!
