What is Open Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty comes in several forms, depending on your needs. A surgeon may choose to use an open or closed procedure. While a closed rhinoplasty uses no external incisions, it does not allow Dr. Stein as much access to the structures of your nose. An open rhinoplasty uses a small, hidden incision, allowing for more significant improvements.
How Does Open Rhinoplasty Work?
You will be asleep under general anesthesia during your procedure. Dr. Stein begins an open rhinoplasty by making a small incision between the two nostrils. This incision allows him to lift the skin and access the structures of your nose. Full access lets him correct many issues, such as crookedness, shape, and bumps or asymmetry. After completing the procedure, he will close the incision with a few tiny sutures.
Is Open Rhinoplasty Safe?
Every surgical procedure includes some element of risk. Dr. Stein will discuss all the possible complications with you during your consultation. Rhinoplasty in the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon is a very safe procedure. Serious problems during or after rhinoplasty are extremely rare. While you should be aware that any surgical procedure involves risks, Dr. Stein’s expertise and skill keep you as safe as possible and minimize the risk of problems.
What is Recovery Like After Open Rhinoplasty?
You can expect some swelling and discomfort during the first few days after your surgery. Dr. Stein will prescribe pain medication to keep you comfortable. You may have a splint on your nose to support it. Most people can return to light daily activities within a week. After two to three weeks, you will usually feel comfortable returning to work. Your nose will continue to improve for six months or more.
How Long Do Rhinoplasty Results Last?
You will see the changes to your nose immediately after your procedure. Your results will become more refined as the swelling resolves. Since the underlying structures of the nose do not change with age, your rhinoplasty results are permanent. Avoid situations that might injure your nose and require another procedure to correct it.
Am I a Good Candidate for Open Rhinoplasty?
Open rhinoplasty is a safe, effective procedure. Most healthy adults can have rhinoplasty, although candidates should have reasonable expectations and achievable goals. Candidates should understand the risks and benefits of the procedure. You should not have rhinoplasty if you have certain health problems or take certain medications.
