We often neglect the neck and area under the chin until they start to show signs of aging. Sagging skin can make your neck area look older and obscure the shape of your chin and jawline. A neck lift firms loose skin, removes fat and tightens muscles for a more sculpted neck

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift restores the contours of the neck area by removing loose skin and fat. This procedure can address concerns such as skin laxity, submental (under the chin) fat, and loose skin along the jawline. The surgery also corrects the loose muscles that cause the appearance of neck bands. A neck lift is the most effective way to address sagging skin and submental fat.

How Does a Neck Lift Work?

Neck lift incisions are usually made under the chin or around the ears. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about two hours. Dr. Stein tightens the skin around the neck during your neck lift and jowls. He will repair separated or stretched neck muscles and remove or redistribute submental fat. A neck lift leaves little to no visible scarring.

What is Recovery Like After a Neck Lift?

You can expect to see bruising and swelling after your neck lift. Many people also notice that their neck area feels tight. These effects usually improve within a week and fade within a few weeks. Most people can return to work one to two weeks after surgery. You may need more time if you have a very physically strenuous job. Dr. Stein will advise you on a schedule for resuming your exercise routine.

Each person heals differently from surgery. If you have any questions during your recovery, contact Dr. Stein and his team for assistance. We pride ourselves in supporting you throughout your recovery to ensure you heal quickly and achieve your best results. Most people heal from a neck lift with no issues or concerns.

Should I Have a Neck Lift or a Facelift?

You are most likely considering a neck lift because you have concerns about that area. However, sagging skin around the neck is often accompanied by skin laxity and wrinkles in the lower part of your face. While a neck lift can improve the appearance of your neck, it may not address all your concerns. A facelift will correct loose skin around the jowls as well as lines and wrinkles. Many people have a neck lift and facelift together to achieve full rejuvenation of the lower face and neck.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?

Most healthy adults make good candidates for a neck lift. Dr. Stein may recommend this procedure for those who have sagging neck skin and other concerns with the neck area. Good candidates have reasonable expectations and goals. You may not be a good candidate if you are pregnant or have certain medical conditions.

I went for a consultation 5 years ago. After watching my face sag and neck wrinkle, I decided to go forward for my 60th birthday. All questions were addressed pre-operatively. Day of surgery went very smoothly. Unfortunately, I have terrible postop nausea which showed up again with this procedure. My first 24hours were complicated with extreme nausea and vomiting. The morning after surgery, I received a couple liters of fluid at the office. The staff was very attentive. My “ten minute” post op check appointment actually took up four hours of their day. After receiving the fluid my recovery quickly improved. When Dr. Stein tells you to be patient with your recovery, it pays to have the mindset that the swelling and bruising are going to take several weeks to resolve. At six weeks there was still notable swelling in front and behind my ears. If you have any length to your hair, it is easy enough to hide. I went back to work at 4 weeks. If anyone noticed, they didn’t say anything. I am now 3months out. I have a couple of sutures that have not dissolve which are a little agivating in my hairline and still a little swelling right at ears. I should also mention that as some nerves are cut during the procedure, there is some intense itching as they heal.
