As we age, our eyelids begin to sag, which can cause us to appear tired, angry, or frustrated. Sagging eyelids can sometimes cause vision impairment, which is dangerous for driving and many other everyday activities. Upper and lower blepharoplasty can restore your bright appearance and protect your eyesight.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure to reposition fat, remove loose skin, and tighten underlying muscles around the eyelids for facial rejuvenation. Two types of blepharoplasty include upper eyelid lifts and lower eyelid lifts. These two may be done individually or in combination.

Upper and lower blepharoplasty costs an average of $4,400 each. An upper eyelid lift corrects hooded eyelids that make you appear angry or tired, while lower eyelid lifts adjust or remove bags under your eyes. The best results are a combination of lower and upper eyelid blepharoplasty for a one-time corrective procedure.

How Long Do Eyelid Lifts Take?

Every eyelid lift is unique, but most take approximately an hour to complete. Dr. Stein uses a local anesthetic with an option for sedation. After you are comfortable, Dr. Stein makes inconspicuous incisions along the creases or inside the lower eyelid, repositions fat pads, tightens the muscles, and removes lax skin.

How Long is Recovery from Eyelid Surgery?

You may return home with a friend or family member immediately after your blepharoplasty procedure. You may be prescribed medication to take orally or apply to your surgical area. Dr. Stein may cover the eyes with gauze to ensure a safe recovery.

Pain medications, cold compresses, and ointments efficiently manage the initial swelling, bruising, and discomfort during recovery. Most patients recover within a week, but more strenuous activities may need to wait until after two weeks.

During your consultation, ask questions such as:

  • What medications will I be given or prescribed?
  • When will the dressings and bandages be removed?
  • When can I resume normal activities? Exercise?
  • When do I return for follow-up care?

If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery period, please contact our Stein Plastic Surgery staff to ensure a quick and comfortable recovery.

How Long Do the Results from Blepharoplasty Last?

The longevity results depend on your aging process. Most patients enjoy the results of their blepharoplasty for 5-7 years. During your consultation, Dr. Stein will determine if complementary procedures such as laser resurfacing, brow lift, or facial lift may benefit your final results.
