There are a variety of reasons patients may augment their cheeks. For some, your bone structure isn’t what you desire. For others, hollow cheeks may be the result of age as tissues wilt and skin loosens. Dr. Adam Stein is Raleigh’s expert facial plastic surgeon, and with cheek implants and his artistic skill and meticulous knowledge of facial anatomy, you can have the cheeks you’ve always wanted.

How Do Cheek Implants Work?

Cheek implants, also called malar implants, are made of solid, pliable silicone or a porous material designed to integrate with your facial tissues. They’re shaped to correct facial asymmetry which can be genetic, age related, or due to traumatic injury. Soft tissue loss can create hollow areas in the cheeks, making you appear gaunt. Cheek implants return roundness to your cheeks, which are the hallmark of a youthful facial shape.

They work by manually restoring volume to the hollows of your cheeks. Dr. Stein makes an incision inside your mouth beneath your upper lip, through which he creates a pocket in your cheek where the implant will sit. The pliable implant is inserted through this small incision and placed for optimum contouring. Once Dr. Stein is satisfied your cheek volume looks natural and improves your facial balance, he may affix the implant in place with small surgical screws. Your incision will be closed with dissolvable sutures.

Am I a Good Candidate?

The best candidates for cheek implants are unhappy with their cheek shape and want to add volume to the area. Thicker skin will help the implants look natural and stay in place. If you take blood thinning or anti-inflammatory medications, be sure to let Dr. Stein know as you may need to pause these in the lead up to your procedure.

What is the Procedure Like?

Dr. Stein performs every procedure at Stein Plastic Surgery in our accredited surgical suite, and cheek implants are done on an outpatient basis. The procedure itself is quick, requiring only 30-60 minutes, and because it’s performed with IV sedation or local anesthesia, you’re ready to recover comfortably at home not long after. The incision inside your mouth gives Dr. Stein access to create the pocket in which your implants will sit, and he’ll ensure he’s pleased with the implants’ final placement before closing the incision with stitches.

Immediately after the procedure, your skin will feel tight around the implant, and you may or may not need compression bandages to minimize swelling and support the implants. You can expect some swelling and mild discomfort, though it should only last 4-7 days. You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions, including avoiding activity that could jostle your implants for a few weeks. Caring for your incision in the first several days may involve a liquid diet and special mouth rinses to minimize the risk of infection. Your sutures should dissolve on their own.

When Will I See Results?

Even though the swelling may somewhat obscure your new cheek shape, you should be able to see immediate volume and roundness in your cheeks. The tightness will recede as the skin stretches to accommodate the implants. As swelling subsides over the next few weeks, your cheeks will appear more naturally contoured. Dr. Stein’s expertise ensures your new cheek shape will enhance your overall facial symmetry and correct your volume loss. Your muscles shouldn’t be affected at all, so your expressions remain uniquely yours. After a few months, your tissues will have settled and your final face shape will be nothing short of beautiful.

Dr. Stein provided excellent outcomes. The resulted look natural and are consistent with what was explained before the surgery. I recommend Dr. Stein to everyone.
